Summary

The Montoyas are used to a life without explanations。 They know better than to ask why the pantry never seems to run low or empty, or why their matriarch won’t ever leave their home in Four Rivers—even for graduations, weddings, or baptisms。 But when Orquídea Divina invites them to her funeral and to collect their inheritance, they hope to learn the secrets that she has held onto so tightly their whole lives。 Instead, Orquídea is transformed, leaving them with more questions than answers。

Seven years later, her gifts have manifested in different ways for Marimar, Rey, and Tatinelly’s daughter, Rhiannon, granting them unexpected blessings。 But soon, a hidden figure begins to tear through their family tree, picking them off one by one as it seeks to destroy Orquídea’s line。 Determined to save what’s left of their family and uncover the truth behind their inheritance, the four descendants travel to Ecuador—to the place where Orquídea buried her secrets and broken promises and never looked back。

I’ve never read anything quite like this, and now I think I’m going to be sucked into the world of magic and fantasy novels。 I loved all of the characters, and the realistic relationships the family had with each other。 So good!

Wonderful trip into the world of an Ecuadorian-American family full of secrets and magic。 This book is jam packed - the story would have been better served by an extra 100 pages to flesh out some of the details and connections but all things considered the world Cordova created was a great place to travel to as a reader and spend a few days in。

I was instantly struck by the way this book was able to capture the feeling of experiencing magic while also being entirely grounded in the dysfunction of family。 This book strings together the past and present in a way that left me guessing throughout。 I was hardly able to put it down and became so invested as small bits fell together like a puzzle。 I loved the vivid imagery and how the author was able to personify forces and intentions。 I could so clearly feel and sympathize with everything ou I was instantly struck by the way this book was able to capture the feeling of experiencing magic while also being entirely grounded in the dysfunction of family。 This book strings together the past and present in a way that left me guessing throughout。 I was hardly able to put it down and became so invested as small bits fell together like a puzzle。 I loved the vivid imagery and how the author was able to personify forces and intentions。 I could so clearly feel and sympathize with everything our characters faced and how it all compiled together in the end。 I never wanted the book to end but was left so incredibly satisfied when it did。 I look forward to seeking out other works by this author and I am so happy to have been able to read something that held some of my own heritage。 I will have a hard time passing this book along to another reader but I know whoever it is will enjoy it as much as I did。 。。。more

I have a complex relationship with fantasy books and this novel neatly exemplifies most of my challenges with them。 I’m all for plots with a touch of magic or the supernatural, but not when the story swirls with such a confusion of ‘anything can happen’ that the book feels more like a nonsensical dream than a true storyline。 I love fantastical worlds and family sagas, but I despised having to frequently stop and consult the complex family tree printed on the first pages just to sort out the many I have a complex relationship with fantasy books and this novel neatly exemplifies most of my challenges with them。 I’m all for plots with a touch of magic or the supernatural, but not when the story swirls with such a confusion of ‘anything can happen’ that the book feels more like a nonsensical dream than a true storyline。 I love fantastical worlds and family sagas, but I despised having to frequently stop and consult the complex family tree printed on the first pages just to sort out the many characters and their relationship to one another。 Halfway into the book, the driving force behind my reading to the end was less about uncovering a mystery and more about trying to find some sense and reality in a confusing fairy-tale adjacent book。 All that being said, I can see why fans of magic realism, like that of Alice Hoffman or Sarah Addison Allen, would adore this book。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I truly wanted to love this book, but I feel like it had too much going on。。。 Magic, talking creatures and aliens?! Which at some point really didn't fit in with the rest of the story。 In all honesty, it probably would make a great mini series on television or something whereas we could learn more dept of the characters and their special gifts。 I truly wanted to love this book, but I feel like it had too much going on。。。 Magic, talking creatures and aliens?! I loved this story。 An out of context summary would be domestic abuse and its generational reach/consequences and how not talking about it just makes it all worse。I've tagged it as Make It A Movie but this suits more of Make It a TV Series, I just don't feel like adding a new tag at the moment。The reason why the book doesn't get 5 stars is because initially, I had a hard time placing Marimar and Rey, basically the cousins/extended family in which exact modern day time period。 There's a mention o I loved this story。 An out of context summary would be domestic abuse and its generational reach/consequences and how not talking about it just makes it all worse。I've tagged it as Make It A Movie but this suits more of Make It a TV Series, I just don't feel like adding a new tag at the moment。The reason why the book doesn't get 5 stars is because initially, I had a hard time placing Marimar and Rey, basically the cousins/extended family in which exact modern day time period。 There's a mention of her using a walkman, then much later on do we have the mention of cell phones in the story, to the point it made me think perhaps the modern day story line starts off in the 90s then we eventually make it to present day。Second reason is the ending。 While it does clear up much of the story, I think it would have been better if we had a more detailed epilogue and also Marimar, Rey and Rhiannon didn't really get to learn their powers/explore them further。 It was more for the purpose of the big show down。Apart from the above, I absolutely loved the writing。 It was lyrical。 I read the book imagining a narrator taking us back and forth between the timelines。 Orquídea's life was pretty shit and heartbreaking when in the end all she needed was love and acceptance but instead she got shamed, denied and then possessed and in the end this translates to her offspring。I think I am not even writing that good a review of the book。 It had great quotable, realistic writing and moments and then there was also the whimsy taking place and how the family was either cursed, saints or witches when people couldn't explain what was going on or couldn't take responsibility for their actions。I loved Rhiannon the most。 Her innocence at times was what was needed in the scenes because the older children/cousins had become jaded when it came to their matriarch and she still had hope and belief。A great book。 Everyone should read it。 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for the ARC。This was a wonderful book I really enjoyed reading。 One of the few issues I had was that most events were described in wonderful detail and then there were other things that basically got glossed over so the difference in description detail/level threw me off balance a little while reading。 There was definitely some jumps in the time line as well but that was less jarring。 Overall a really enjoyable read!

This is the story of Orquidea Divina Montoya's magic, and how it came to be。 It's a story about an Ecuadorian family and their roots。 Sometimes, "roots" literally, as the story opens and Orquidea has invited her family back to her house for her death。。。 she becomes a ceiba tree。 What I liked: the legends and magic, the relationships as they develop between a few of the cousins as they learn about who they are。 What I did not like: The first half of the book was jam-packed with family members and This is the story of Orquidea Divina Montoya's magic, and how it came to be。 It's a story about an Ecuadorian family and their roots。 Sometimes, "roots" literally, as the story opens and Orquidea has invited her family back to her house for her death。。。 she becomes a ceiba tree。 What I liked: the legends and magic, the relationships as they develop between a few of the cousins as they learn about who they are。 What I did not like: The first half of the book was jam-packed with family members and characters (the family tree chart at the front of the book "kind of" helped) and it was a bit hard to follow。 The jumping back in forth from Orquidea's childhood and first marriage to the present--sometimes when I read books this method of story development is okay for me, but sometimes it is difficult。 I found this one difficult。 Overall, I liked it。 It took me a while to get through this one。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book so much! I will say I wasn’t quite sure where it was going in that first half。 I was intrigued, but was confused for a few chapters with some of the flashbacks and history bits。 This is intentional; I think it’s meant to keep you guessing and it did。 I incorrectly assumed a certain plot element that is introduced halfway was a tad bit cliche - but it’s not。 The author took that, spun it, and flipped it so that by the end of the book I was going “What the heck did I just read? wow。 i was completely enchanted by this book from start to finish。 i loved the the dual timeline that gave the story a sense of intrigue and mystery。 the book as a whole was also incredibly whimsical, giving me a taste of magic at the tip of my tongue while i was reading。 the inheritance of orquidea divina intertwines the past and the future, weaving an evocative tale of family drama, secrets, broken promises, and magic。 very highly recommended! the audiobook is a gem too。

3。5⭐️ this could have totally been longer。 It could totally be because I love high fantasy but I wish this went more in depth on how the magic works。 I have a vague understanding but I want all of the details。

This is not your typical paranormal story。 The magic is much more subtle than that。 We are shown that magic slyly, in glimpses。 Things are just what they seem and they are not。 I found just going with the flow was the best way to read this book。 It is internally consistent, but how many times do we really look inside。Orquidea was named so by her mother。 The habit in her family was to give the first-born daughter her father's name, in a feminine form。 Orquidea father dumped her mother when she be This is not your typical paranormal story。 The magic is much more subtle than that。 We are shown that magic slyly, in glimpses。 Things are just what they seem and they are not。 I found just going with the flow was the best way to read this book。 It is internally consistent, but how many times do we really look inside。Orquidea was named so by her mother。 The habit in her family was to give the first-born daughter her father's name, in a feminine form。 Orquidea father dumped her mother when she became pregnant, so she didn't want to remember the man whenever she called her daughter。 She maned her instead for the nicest gift the man had given her, an orchid。 That made it easier for me to read the book, Instead of stumbling over Orquidea each time, I read it as Orchid。Orquidea had five husbands and eight children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren when she invited them all home for her funeral。 She had special gifts to give them。 We are really only concerned with 2 grandchildren, Reymundo and Marimar, and one great-grandchild, Rhiannon。 The visible gifts she gave these three, flowers growing out of their skin, were closely connected with the magic she was passing on to the descendants she thought could best deal with the repercussions of having that magic。 Someone else was looking for that magic。 That person was intent on retrieving the bits of magic her family had by whatever means necessary。 This is the heart of the story。 To save themselves, Rey and Mari had to retrace Orquidea's life。 It was a very interesting story。 I liked it。 It was a bit literary, but it did get thrilling toward the end。 。。。more

This exceeded my expectations, I can’t lie。 Magical realism and a family’s journey to come to terms with their dysfunction and reeling in the wake of long-kept secrets that only led to a steady rhythm of repeated mistakes。 Sign me the hell up。 I absolutely loved this book and this story。 I loved Marimar and Rey and their relationship and banter and the feeling of found family within family。 Just…。if I could absorb this book into my very essence I would。 Without question。
